The Institute of Journalism and Social Communication at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn was established on 1 January 2005. However, the history of academic journalism in Olsztyn is longer, as it began in 2002, when a course of study with the same name as the current Institute was created.
The institute is divided into two departments: Journalism and Social Communication & Media. In addition, it has a radio and television studio.
The research conducted at the institute deals with various aspects of media functioning. Apart from an analysis of the media, such as television, radio, the press, the research at the institute is focused on network environments, including websites, blogs, forums and games.
The institute provides training in journalism and social communication (bachelor degree); image communication and public relations (master's degree); as well as multimedia and digital creation (master's degree).
The UWM Doctoral School provides doctoral training in the discipline of sciences of social communication and media.
Prof. dr hab. Marzena Świgoń is the current Head of the Institute.
